GENERAZIONE E - Development of technologies for advanced generation of space transport systems

Obiettivo

GENERAZIONE E implements industrial research and experimental development activities dedicated to the development of technologies for advanced generation of space transport systems, in particular it is planned to:

  • Design and implement models for predicting the in-flight performance of liquid propellant space thrusters (validation with small and large-scale ground tests).

  • To devise advanced methods and tools for the thermo-ablative characterization of materials for combustion chambers of solid and liquid propellant space thrusters.

  • Design and build a prototype (for ground tests) of a device for reducing acoustic noise generated by a supersonic jet of a liquid propulsion system and of a device for reducing chemical emissions generated by a supersonic jet of a solid propellant engine.

  • Design and implement integrated temperature and deformation sensors in the internal thermal protections of combustion chambers and nozzles.

  • Design and implement non-intrusive devices for measuring the regression rate of thermal protections and the thermo-fluid-dynamic and chemical properties of the single and two-phase jets of space thrusters.

These systems, once implemented on the ground test benches of solid and liquid propellant engines, will lead to a significant improvement and enhancement of the development and manufacturing capabilities of solid and liquid propellant thrusters for space applications.

These solid and liquid thrusters will then be adapted for the future generation of European launchers including Ariane 6 (which from 2020 will gradually replace the Ariane 5 launcher) and the Vega E launcher, the most advanced version of the Vega LV and Vega C launchers (operational from 2024).
