Successful tests for DLR in the hypersonic facility GHIBLI tests for DLR in the hypersonic facility GHIBLI
A test campaign was successfully performed in the hypersonic facility GHIBLI for the German Aerospace Center DLR in the framework of the European funded LIGHT-TPS project.

The LIGHT-TPS project is devoted to research and development of Ultra-High Temperature Ceramics (UHTC) coatings for super light-weight Thermal Protection Systems (TPS) of space re-entry vehicles.

In particular 4 UHTC coated cylindrical samples of 2 cm of diameter were exposed to an hypersonic jet of plasma composed of air and argon, achieving surface temperatures of 1800°C and over for duration of 5 minutes.

Two UHTC coatings made of different zirconiun diboride (ZrB2) compositions were tested with the aim of increasing oxidation resistance.

GHIBLI facility has proved once again to be an extremely useful tool for material sample characterization also thanks to its flexibility in following and timely satisfying the customer needs.

2017-08-27T22:00:00Z
